The Abu Dhabi Traffic Police
What should you know about the Abu Dhabi traffic police?
They are a division of the Abu Dhabi police who deal with traffic safety and traffic violations.
These officers are constantly on the lookout for drivers who commit traffic violations and are ready to issue heavy fines and severe penalties (including possible jail time) to those drivers who blatantly break the law.
I would recommend learning about some of the traffic laws before you attempt to drive in Abu Dhabi because as they say, ignorance of the law is no excuse.
The Abu Dhabi police website gives you all the information that you need to know in order for you to drive safely and soundly in Abu Dhabi.
It is the policy of the Abu Dhabi traffic police to maintain the safety of all drivers and pedestrians who use the streets of Abu Dhabi. One of their mottos is ‘We won’t stop you just to gather the fine; we’ll stop you for your safety and the safety of those around you.’
If other police departments acted under that motto, maybe the roads the world over would be safer for everyone. The majority of the times, the streets in Abu Dhabi are packed with cars because this city has a huge population and is a booming business center.
This traffic is even worse at times when there are holiday, such as the holy month of Ramadan. That’s why there is an ever present public safety campaign in place to help protect everyone on the roads, including the police themselves.
This campaign involves putting more officers on the streets at key times when traffic is at its worst. The officers in Abu Dhabi drive really nice patrol cars and they also have a fleet of motorcycles, which are easier to maneuver in the ever present heavy traffic.
Their cars are equipped with the latest in advanced radar technology, called ironically enough ‘Sniper’, in order to detect and stop speeders who tend to be the reason for the vast majority of the traffic accidents in Abu Dhabi. Street racers are oftentimes a problem as kids with souped up cars like to race and show off and this can be very dangerous for other drivers.
Since implementing the new radar system within the safety campaign, the Abu Dhabi traffic police have reported a significant increase in the numbers of drivers who were caught speeding and making the roads unsafe for other motorists.
These drivers received hefty fines, some of them even got jail time, and most had their cars impounded for a period of time. If you speed or break the traffic laws in Abu Dhabi, you can look forward to the exact same treatment.
