Single female in Deira

I am a British Born Chinese (BBC) and I have just been offered a 2 year teaching post in Deira from 2010-2012 but know absolutely no one in Dubai.

I have been to Dubai for a week but didn't get to explore Deria. Any input on if it's a suitable place for a BBC single female?

Are there any expats in the area and any expat or Christian social clubs near by? Any advice will be helpful.

There is meeting in speakers club in AL Futtaim training center this Saturday 7-10 p.m where many expats come and have good time speaking and socializing. You can try it for free.

Hey just randomly read your message. There are some social clubs around. There is one meeting on Saturday and I know some christain clubs .

Hey how are you? I'm also a BBC but i've been living in Dubai for over 2 years now. I'm staying in the Marina area but ii have lived in Deira before. Expats over here are generally open minded so as long as you have the same mind set you'll find friends no problem.
The deira area is classified as old dubai and as such does not have a large expat (western) community. Majority of expats in this area are asian typically filipino who are friendly by nature.
Although a Muslim country Dubai is very modern and you will not face any sexual discrimination, if anything you will be treated better because if it. The only note here is to dress appropriately in respect of traditions.

Deira is a safe place, but so is anywhere in Dubai relative to China and/or the UK. is your employer providing housing? if so i recommend the housing apartments or newer condo developments. a lot of deira is old establishments. just comes down to what is "suitable" for you. are you looking for social activity proximity, security/safety, commute to work, etc? similarly consider Bur Dubai and Jumeira as well.

as far as expats, there are tons everywhere, mostly in the newer cities/developments. nothing is too far however so where you live is less relevant. there are reasonable social clubs. i recommend the dubai forum and dubai lime to find ethnicity/religion specific groups.
